Derek Jeter, the former Yankees captain, couldn't resist a playful jab at the New York Mets' current woes during his appearance at Fanatics Fest.

Amidst what has been described as a "nightmare season" for the Mets, who are reportedly preparing to sell off major assets, Jeter seized an opportunity to comment on the team's situation. Addressing the crowd, many of whom were Mets fans, Jeter remarked with a smile, "Where’s the Met fans? You could use Pete [Alonso] right around now, man, huh?"

His comment alluded to Pete Alonso, the Mets' former All-Star first baseman, who departed in free agency. Alonso signed a five-year, $155 million contract with the Baltimore Orioles after the Mets reportedly did not extend him a formal offer. Alonso has continued his consistent performance with the Orioles, posting 21 home runs and 65 RBIs with a .257 batting average, figures largely in line with his career statistics.

The Mets are currently in last place in the NL East with a 41-57 record. The team's struggles have led to fan frustration, with chants of "Pete Alonso" heard throughout Citi Field. One fan was reportedly ejected from a game for chanting "Fire Stearns" chants, though owner Steve Cohen clarified on social media that the individual's behavior was disruptive to other attendees.

Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns attempted to fill the void left by Alonso by acquiring Jorge Polanco, but Polanco has seen limited playing time due to injuries. The Mets face a critical trade deadline to move players and rebuild their farm system, as the team already has nearly $300 million committed to payroll for the upcoming season.
