Deputy Speaker Nusrat Ghani Accused of Scripting Budget Remarks to Aid Speaker Ambitions

Deputy Speaker Nusrat Ghani has been accused of pre-scripting her responses to heckling MPs during a recent Budget speech, in moves allegedly aimed at enhancing her chances of succeeding Sir Lindsay Hoyle as Speaker of the House. Ghani, a Conservative MP, drew praise for her sharp and humorous retorts during Chancellor John Healey's address.

One notable exchange involved Ghani telling MP Luke Evans, a former GP, to "write yourself a prescription to calm down." However, critics have privately suggested that these remarks were prepared in advance. One senior Conservative MP reportedly stated that some of Ghani's witty responses were "pre–scripted before the event," adding that at least one colleague had been informed by Ghani beforehand that he was "on my list" for a potential rebuke.

These accusations have led to claims that Ghani's actions were intended to impress the House of Commons and improve her standing in the race to become Speaker. Sir Lindsay Hoyle became Speaker in 2019 and is expected to serve for at least another decade. Allies of Ghani, who holds a narrow majority in her Weald constituency, suggest she might seek the Speaker role before a potential general election, as incumbent Speakers typically run unopposed in their seats.

Ghani herself was unavailable for comment. Both Dr. Evans and other MPs who received putdowns from Ghani have maintained that they had no prior knowledge of her intended remarks.
