Deputy Speaker Ghani Accused of Scripting Budget Remarks to Aid Speaker Ambitions
Nus Ghani faces accusations of pre-planning witty responses to hecklers during a Budget speech to enhance her standing for a potential Speaker role.
Deputy Speaker Nus Ghani has been accused of pre-scripting her responses to heckling Members of Parliament during Chancellor John Healey's recent Budget speech. The allegations suggest these 'witty' putdowns were intended to boost her public profile and improve her chances of succeeding Sir Lindsay Hoyle as Speaker of the House.
Ghani received praise for her sharp retorts to rowdy MPs, including a remark directed at former GP and shadow energy minister Luke Evans, telling him to "write yourself a prescription to calm down." However, critics have privately claimed that these exchanges were not spontaneous.
One senior Conservative MP told The Mail on Sunday that at least one colleague had been forewarned by Ghani that he was "he was 'on my list' for a potential Budget rebuke," indicating pre-planning of the interactions. Critics have accused her of making these moves to impress the Commons and position herself for the Speakership.
Allies of Ghani have dismissed these claims. Sir Lindsay Hoyle, who became Speaker in 2019, is expected to serve for at least another decade. However, supporters of Ghani, who holds a narrow majority of 6,842 in her Sussex Weald constituency, suggest she might aim to become Speaker before a general election. Traditionally, sitting Speakers are not challenged in their home constituencies.
Ghani was unavailable for comment. Dr. Evans and other MPs who were addressed by Ghani during the debate have stated they had no prior knowledge of being singled out.
