Deputy Rescues Driver From Burning Vehicle After High-Speed Chase in Washington
A Kitsap County Sheriff's deputy pulled a man from his burning SUV following a high-speed chase that concluded with a crash, leading to charges of eluding an officer and reckless driving.
A Kitsap County Sheriff's deputy rescued a man from a burning vehicle after a high-speed chase ended in a crash on State Highway 104 in Kingston, Washington, on Monday night.
The incident began around 11:30 p.m. when the deputy observed the suspect driving approximately 20 miles per hour over the speed limit. The driver refused to pull over and accelerated, reaching speeds of up to 111 miles per hour, according to the sheriff's office.
The deputy lost sight of the suspect until discovering the SUV had crashed into a yard, striking a tractor and erupting in flames. Body camera footage captured the deputy attempting to free the driver from the vehicle.
The deputy initially tried to break the driver's side window with his flashlight, but the trapped man indicated he could not exit that way. The deputy then moved to the passenger side door, repeatedly striking the handle with his flashlight as flames grew from the engine.
A Port Gamble police officer arrived with a fire extinguisher and extinguished the flames. The deputy then pulled the man from the wreckage. North Kitsap Fire and Rescue transported the man to a hospital for treatment of his injuries.
Authorities have not released the suspect's identity. He faces charges for attempting to elude a police officer and reckless driving.
