Deputy Fatal Collision Kills Civilian in Commerce
A Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputy crashed into a civilian vehicle while responding to an emergency call, resulting in the death of the civilian driver and impacting a second vehicle.
A Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy was involved in a fatal collision early Tuesday morning while responding to an emergency call, according to authorities.
The incident occurred around 1:20 a.m. at the intersection of Sheila Street and Atlantic Boulevard in Commerce, California. The deputy, en route to an unrelated call about a person unconscious and not breathing in Cudahy, collided with a civilian vehicle.
Officials confirmed that the driver of the civilian vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. A second vehicle was also impacted by the initial collision and sustained minor damage. The deputy sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital. The driver of the second vehicle was unharmed.
Authorities stated that the deputy’s lights and sirens were activated at the time of the crash. The speed of the deputy’s vehicle is currently unknown.
Images from the scene show significant damage to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department vehicle, with its airbags deployed. A black sedan, believed to be the civilian vehicle, appeared to have less severe damage, while a third vehicle was also observed with substantial damage.
The identities of the deceased civilian and the deputy have not yet been released. The sheriff's office indicated that dashcam footage from the deputy's vehicle is expected to be released.
Commerce is an incorporated city within Los Angeles County, located approximately eight miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles and about five miles north of Cudahy.
