New York Giants cornerback Deonte Banks is making a significant impact during the team's preseason, demonstrating a marked improvement that suggests his career is on an upward trajectory. After two seasons where his performance has been inconsistent, Banks is meeting the challenge to string together positive plays, aiming to reverse the "bust" aura that has followed him.

"The new coaching staff gave me a reset," Banks told The Post. "And let me be me. Let me go out there and play my game. Let me go out there and do what I do best."

This approach appears to involve increased usage as an aggressive press corner in man coverage. The positive performances are crucial for Banks, who is in the final year of his rookie contract and playing for both his immediate future with the Giants and his long-term NFL career.

Performance on the Field

During the Giants' 26-3 preseason victory over the Dolphins, Banks showcased his development. He was on the field with starting cornerbacks Paulson Adebo and Greg Newsome II for significant playing time. On one key play in the second quarter, Banks was in tight coverage on Dolphins receiver Kevin Coleman Jr. on a third-down incompletion, a scenario where he might have previously failed to make a play. Head coach John Harbaugh noted Banks's coverage, stating, "I would say he was like glue out there."

Later in the same quarter, Banks displayed his strength as a run defender, tackling running back Ollie Gordon II for a minimal gain. At 6-foot-2 and 200 pounds, Banks possesses the ideal size and strength for the role, with his current focus on technique and concentration. This is a notable improvement from his uneven rookie year in 2023, where he was the 24th overall pick.

Defensive Scheme and Coaching Staff

Banks's performance has seen a shift from his previous seasons. While he was more aggressive under former defensive coordinator Wink Martindale, his play reportedly regressed under Shane Bowen. He now appears re-energized under new defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson. "This is fun," Banks said. "I'm having a great time with it. I wouldn't say I'm more confident because I feel I'm always a confident dude. I guess you can see it in my play more."

The team's defensive backfield faces some uncertainty. Adebo had a disappointing first year with the Giants, and Newsome is on a one-year deal. Rookie Colton Hood has dealt with injuries. With Banks in the final year of his contract and other cornerbacks like Art Green and Korie Black also competing for roles, his strong preseason performance is vital for solidifying his position and adding depth to the unit.

Looking Ahead

Harbaugh expressed optimism about the cornerback position, stating, "It seems like we're deep at corner. Certainly planning on that panning out throughout the course of the season."

Banks believes he is a better player now than at any other point in his Giants tenure, feeling "great" and predicting that the entire defense "can be really great." His renewed commitment and improved play are seen as a significant positive development for the Giants as the regular season approaches.
