Dentists Recommend Key Ingredients for Effective Whitening Toothpaste
Experts advise looking beyond surface abrasives to peroxide and other agents for true stain removal.
To achieve a brighter smile, dentists recommend looking for whitening toothpastes that contain specific ingredients beyond mild abrasives. While ingredients like hydrated silica and calcium carbonate can buff away surface stains, they do not alter the tooth's actual color, according to dental professionals.
True whitening toothpastes often incorporate peroxide, such as hydrogen or carbamide peroxide, which can penetrate tooth enamel and break down stains through oxidation. Dr. Yev Davydov, a general dentist, suggests toothpastes with 1-2% hydrogen peroxide combined with fluoride for both whitening and cavity protection.
Another effective ingredient is phthalimidoperoxycaproic acid, or PAP, an oxidizer that is gentler on sensitive teeth and gums compared to traditional peroxides. It is also recommended for individuals with veneers or bonding.
For those with sensitive teeth, Dr. Lauren Becker, a general and cosmetic dentist, recommends looking for formulas containing stannous fluoride or hydroxyapatite. She also cautioned against ingredients like charcoal, which are often marketed for whitening but are not recommended by experts.
Maintaining a consistent brushing routine, especially after consuming staining foods and drinks, can also help prevent stains and reduce the need for whitening treatments. Experts advise incorporating these scientifically-backed ingredients into dental care routines for effective and safe teeth whitening.
