Denny's is embarking on a significant revival effort, marked by restaurant renovations, new locations, menu enhancements, and a restructured leadership team. The initiative, dubbed 'Project Grand Slam,' comes as the diner chain grapples with a series of franchise closures and financial difficulties experienced by some operators.

This strategic push aims to modernize the brand and reverse recent trends of shrinking its restaurant footprint. The company announced plans in October 2024 to close 150 restaurants by the end of 2025. More recently, on September 3, M15 Inc., a franchise operator, abruptly shuttered all five of its Denny's locations in Minnesota and Wisconsin. The operator cited falling revenues, cash shortages, and lender pressure as reasons for its inability to meet payroll or secure supplies, and indicated plans to file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy.

In response to the closures, Denny's corporate office expressed regret and stated it is working with franchisees to explore options for reopening the affected restaurants under new ownership, though without guarantees.

Denny's was acquired in January 2026 by TriArtisan Capital Advisors, Treville Capital Group, and Yadav Enterprises for approximately $620 million. The new ownership, with substantial experience in the restaurant industry, has unveiled 'Project Grand Slam.' This 24-month strategy is designed to update restaurant facilities, improve operational efficiency, refine the menu, and bolster Denny's digital presence and catering services.

Christopher Bode, formerly the company's chief operating officer, assumed the CEO role in April 2026. Under the revival plan, Denny's anticipates renovating up to 350 existing restaurants and opening approximately 20 new locations in 2026, with another 20 planned for 2027.

Menu innovation is also a key component. The chain has already introduced its Triple Play Combo meals, featuring items like the Diner QP burger. A revamped menu is scheduled for testing in about 40 restaurants between late October and mid-November, with a broader rollout set for April 2027.

Denny's is also expanding its catering services through a partnership with ezCater. Nearly 700 locations currently offer this service, and the company aims to have close to 1,000 locations participating by the end of September 2026.

Founded in Lakewood, California, in 1953, Denny's has grown into a well-known American diner brand, famous for its all-day breakfast offerings like the Grand Slam. Despite recent challenges, the company still operates over 1,300 restaurants globally. Analysts view the business as being in a state of transition, with its loyal customer base potentially playing a crucial role in its future success.
