Democrats Sue Trump Administration Over Alleged Election Pressure Campaign
The lawsuit seeks to block federal interference in state-run elections and prevent the threat of prosecution against local officials.
A coalition of Democrats has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, alleging a campaign to interfere with state-run elections and threatening local officials. The suit, filed in federal court in Washington, D.C., asks a judge to block alleged attempts by the administration to force states to remove voters from registration lists, segregate certain ballots, and intimidate election officials.
The Democratic National Committee, its congressional and Senate campaign arms, and several lawmakers are plaintiffs in the case. The lawsuit comes less than two weeks before Election Day.
The Justice Department has stated its actions are aimed at ensuring the integrity of the election system. The Trump administration has previously clashed with officials in states like California and Nevada over allegations of noncitizen voting. The Justice Department and Department of Homeland Security have accused these states of not cooperating to remove noncitizens from their voter rolls.
In court documents filed in Los Angeles County, officials reported that an initial analysis of 200 individuals from a Department of Justice list of supposed noncitizens found that nearly 40% indicated they were born in the United States, suggesting they are citizens. Additionally, 71.2% of the records had no voting history.
A DOJ spokesperson accused California of "willful blindness" for refusing to verify the citizenship of individuals on the provided list. "Federal law doesn't permit this willful blindness," the spokesperson stated.
Democrats contend that the administration's actions, particularly those taken close to an election, represent federal overreach and are designed to undermine confidence in the election results. The lawsuit criticizes the administration for pressuring states to purge voter lists using "shoddily compiled lists of supposed noncitizens—target lists that have crumbled upon the barest inspection."
The suit also asserts that President Trump has consistently promoted false claims about election fraud, using these claims as a pretext to gain control over elections, despite repeated rejections by courts.
