Democrats in Congress are preparing for a series of wide-ranging investigations targeting former President Donald Trump's family members, close allies, and business associates, according to reports. Incoming committee leaders have indicated that a primary focus will be on alleged corruption and questionable business practices linked to the Trump administration.
Robert Garcia of California, a key Democratic figure expected to chair the House Oversight Committee in January 2027, stated that "anything that has to do with Trump family corruption is going to be looked at on day one." A congressional official with knowledge of the committee's plans told the Daily Mail that investigations will also target "anyone colluding with the Trump administration" and "corporate corruption."
Potential areas of inquiry include the finances and business ventures of Donald Trump Jr., including his May 2026 wedding and his role in a cryptocurrency deal reportedly worth $1.4 billion. The venture capital firm where Trump Jr. is a partner has already been a subject of scrutiny, with a Democratic aide describing the scale of planned investigations as "gargantuan." Jared Kushner's business dealings, particularly concerning his "mysterious island pursuits" with Ivanka Trump, are also reportedly on the Democrats' agenda.
Beyond the immediate Trump orbit, Democrats plan to conduct extensive reviews of the Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), citing concerns over their funding and operations during Trump's second term. The handling of classified information, personnel purges, and the Pentagon's actions, especially in light of recent international conflicts, are also flagged for investigation.
Furthermore, the committee intends to probe the Trump administration's handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case files. This investigation may also extend to businessmen and large corporations that have donated to Trump or engaged in business deals with him.
Republicans have expressed concern about the upcoming investigations. House GOP Majority Leader Steve Scalise has characterized the Democrats' plans as "retribution" and "countless witch hunts under the guise of 'oversight.'" He has reportedly instructed Republican committee chairs to identify potential targets of these Democratic probes.
The Democrats' electoral victories have secured them a significant majority in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, granting them considerable power over legislative agendas and investigative capabilities. This control is expected to influence budget negotiations and foreign policy decisions, in addition to enabling their investigative pursuits.
