House Democrats have initiated an investigation into the Trump administration's handling of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool renovation, focusing on whether prosecutors knowingly pursued a "bogus" indictment against a former Olympian and if political pressure was applied to retaliate. The probe, led by the House Judiciary Committee's top Democrat, Jamie Raskin, seeks to uncover communications related to the damaged pool lining and the prosecution of three-time Olympian David Hearn, 67.

The investigation follows the dismissal of felony vandalism charges against Hearn by Trump's U.S. Attorney for D.C., Jeanine Pirro, late last month. Prosecutors cited insufficient evidence and "newly released documents" from the Interior Department that indicated the damage to the pool's lining was a result of a "hasty" and "botched" installation aimed at meeting a July 4 deadline, rather than intentional vandalism.

This abrupt reversal by the prosecution contrasted with earlier claims by Pirro, who asserted that federal prosecutors possessed "tremendous evidence" of Hearn's guilt. Hearn had faced charges of malicious destruction of property, with a potential sentence of up to 10 years in prison.

In a letter addressed to Pirro and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, Raskin questioned whether the U.S. Attorney's Office for D.C. "maliciously prosecuted an American citizen it knew to be innocent." The committee is also probing whether the Department of the Interior "deliberately mislead prosecutors to cover up a ‘botched’ renovation by a company awarded a dubious $15 million insider no-bid contract."

Court documents suggest that the Department of Justice was reportedly aware of the newly installed pool liner peeling over a week before Hearn's arrest. However, prosecutors contended that Interior officials did not provide this crucial evidence until after Hearn's indictment, raising questions about the timeline and transparency of the case.

Raskin stated in a press release that "at a minimum, it appears that members of the Trump Administration were ready and willing to imprison an innocent American for a decade in a desperate effort to soothe an ex-landlord’s wounded ego about a terrible paint job and wasteful contract." He emphasized the need to "get to the bottom of these murky waters to rid our justice system of any and all residual contamination."
