Democrats Aim for Midterm Gains Amidst Tight Congressional Races
Republicans face potential losses in House and Senate control following a shift in polling trends and an intense final campaign push by Democrats.
Democrats are mounting a final surge in the midterm elections, seeking to capitalize on a late October polling shift that has placed Republican control of the House and Senate in jeopardy. President Trump has engaged in a series of rallies in an effort to energize Republican turnout, while also indicating his intent to utilize his veto power should Democrats gain control.
Analysts from The Cook Political Report are now forecasting a Democratic gain of 12 to 25 House seats, which would be sufficient to erase the Republican majority. The Senate is also seen as a closely contested battleground, with Democrats considered "slight favorites" to overcome the current 53-47 Republican majority. Several Senate races are being closely watched as pivotal to the election's outcome, with many currently within a 2% polling margin.
Key Senate races drawing attention include:
- South Carolina: Incumbent Senator Darline Graham (R) faces Dr. Annie Andrews (D). Graham, who won a tough primary with support from President Trump, has acknowledged inexperience in national security during a debate. A Republican group recently invested $750,000 in the race as Andrews has seen gains in the GOP-leaning state.
- Alaska: Senator Dan Sullivan (R) is in a competitive race against Mary Peltola (D). This contest has been complicated by allegations linking Peltola's campaign to an effort to place a "Decoy Dan" on the ballot with the same name as Sullivan, prompting a Department of Justice investigation.
- Maine: Senator Susan Collins (R) is challenged by Troy Jackson (D). A previous Democratic candidate's campaign imploded, leading to Jackson's candidacy. Collins' campaign has been critical of Jackson, with one remark suggesting he was only fit to sell "a cord of wood."
- Kansas: Senator Roger Marshall (R) is facing Adam Hamilton (D), a megachurch pastor. Hamilton has leveraged high diesel prices, while Marshall has contended with voter dissatisfaction over his medical billing practices in a state that has not elected a Democrat to the Senate since 1932.
- Texas: Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) is running against State Representative James Talarico (D). Republicans have invested heavily in this race, with Trump branding Talarico as "Talafreako."
- Michigan: Former Representative Mike Rogers (R) is in a tight race against Abdul El-Sayed (D). El-Sayed has faced scrutiny over his past anti-Israel positions and alleged ties to the Muslim Brotherhood. Trump has labeled El-Sayed a "jihadist," and Senator JD Vance has called him a "little weasel."
- Ohio: Senator Sherrod Brown (D) faces Jon Husted (R). Despite being in a Republican stronghold, Brown is considered a strong contender. President Trump has publicly endorsed Husted, referring to him multiple times.
- Iowa: Representative Ashley Hinson (R) is running against Josh Turek (D). Hinson, a former television journalist, is considered a Republican standard-bearer. Turek, a four-time Paralympian, is attempting to make the race competitive in the Republican-leaning state.
- Louisiana: Representative Julia Letlow (R) is in a tied race with Jamie Davis (D), according to a recent poll. President Trump endorsed Letlow over incumbent Senator Bill Cassidy. Davis has been appealing to independent voters and Black voters, who constitute a significant portion of the electorate.
In House races, several contests are also proving to be close:
- New York-21: Anthony Constantino (R), owner of Sticker Mule, is running against dairy farmer Blake Gendebien (D) in a district Trump carried by a significant margin. Constantino has displayed a large Trump sign and commissioned a statue of the former president, but Gendebien is leveraging voter dissatisfaction with tariffs.
- Ohio-7: Representative Max Miller (R), a former White House aide, is facing allegations of family abuse, which he denies. His opponent, ironworker Brian Poindexter (D), also has past legal issues, including a guilty plea to assault.
- Texas-15: Incumbent Representative Monica De La Cruz (R) is in a close race with Tejano singer Bobby Pulido (D). De La Cruz's campaign made a remark about Pulido's musical career that he has used to his advantage, performing at numerous events. Pulido has also faced reports of a former bandmate with a criminal record.
- North Carolina-9: Representative Richard Hudson (R), chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, is in a challenging race against retired Army Major Richard Ojeda (D). Hudson is campaigning in a district that Trump carried by 16 points, featuring Fort Bragg.
