The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) are preparing to intensify their pressure on New York Governor Kathy Hochul regarding her stance on taxing wealthy residents, according to a report. Gustavo Gordillo, a leader within the DSA, stated that the organization intends to focus its efforts on the governor, particularly after a recent wave of primary election wins for candidates endorsed by the group.

Recent primary elections saw significant success for candidates supported by Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who has been vocal in his support for increased taxes on the wealthy. Among the victors were DSA-endorsed congressional candidates Darializa Avila Chevalier and Claire Valdez, along with progressive candidate Brad Lander. These wins have been interpreted as a demonstration of Mamdani's political influence and the growing sway of the progressive wing within the Democratic Party.

Governor Hochul, identified as a moderate, had previously endorsed Mamdani in an effort to leverage the progressive energy that propelled him to victory in New York City's mayoral race. However, she has maintained her opposition to raising taxes on affluent New Yorkers, a key demand of Mamdani and the DSA.

This divergence on fiscal policy has led to public confrontations, with crowds chanting "tax the rich" at the governor. Gordillo, who co-chairs the DSA's New York City chapter, indicated to The New York Times that should Hochul win re-election, the DSA plans a renewed push for higher taxes, potentially involving pressure from their allies in Washington, D.C.

Gordillo also expressed a desire to see more democratic socialists in New York's congressional delegation, stating, "I think we have to show New York what it means to have three democratic socialists in the congressional delegation."
