The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) is planning to release an updated platform that includes radical proposals to fundamentally alter the U.S. governmental structure. Key among these proposals are the elimination of the U.S. Senate and the replacement of the president and Supreme Court with an executive branch and judiciary that would be chosen by and subordinate to Congress.
This proposed overhaul, according to a source familiar with the DSA's planning, is part of an update to their long-term vision for U.S. policy. The group intends to roll out these changes next week. Beyond restructuring the branches of government, the updated platform is also expected to call for amnesty for all immigrants and the defunding of the Department of War.
These additions would complement the DSA's existing platform, which already advocates for an immediate end to all deportations, free migration without restrictive controls, and the extension of full voting rights to individuals with criminal convictions and non-citizens. The organization, which describes itself as a "working-class alternative to the Democratic Party," has seen its influence grow, with several endorsed candidates achieving electoral victories.
Recent primary wins have emboldened the DSA. Candidates such as Melat Kiros in Colorado, Darializa Avila-Chevalier and Adam Hamawy in New York, and Donavan McKinney in Michigan have defeated incumbent Democratic representatives. The group has previously endorsed prominent figures like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Rep. Rashida Tlaib. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, an immigrant from Uganda, is also identified as a prominent DSA member.
Following these primary successes, the DSA stated, "only socialism can solve decades of capitalist mismanagement in the US." The organization asserts that its newly elected leaders will advocate for the working class.
In addition to the proposed governmental reforms, the DSA's broader platform includes advocating for a 32-hour work week without a reduction in pay or benefits, the implementation of Medicare for All, the cancellation of all student loan debt, the elimination of cash bail, and universal rent control. The DSA's program for 2025-2026 also calls for a "new democratic constitution" to establish civil, political, and democratic rights for all through proportional representation in a single federal legislature.
