The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) have released a manifesto, titled "Workers Deserve More," proposing a radical overhaul of the United States' governmental structure. The declaration calls for the abolition of the presidency, the U.S. Senate, and the Electoral College, aiming to dismantle the existing two-party system and establish a multi-party democracy.
Central to the DSA's proposal is the expansion of the House of Representatives, which would then be responsible for selecting the president and members of the Supreme Court. This would effectively replace the current constitutional framework with a system resembling a European-style parliamentary democracy. The manifesto argues that an expanded House would be more representative than the Senate, where each state holds equal representation regardless of population.
The DSA asserts that the current presidential office wields too much unilateral power, particularly in initiating military actions. Furthermore, the group criticizes the Supreme Court for what they describe as an expansion of executive influence. Under the proposed system, an executive and judiciary would be chosen by and subordinate to Congress.
Beyond structural governmental changes, the "Workers Deserve More" declaration also advocates for policies such as public ownership of major corporations and essential industries to ensure democratic control and accountability. It further calls for aggressive wealth taxes on wealthy individuals and corporations to fund public services and infrastructure. The manifesto states its ultimate goal is to dismantle the "capitalist oligarchy" and create what it terms a "real democracy," acknowledging that some demands might be achievable within the current system but that complete realization would require building a new society.
Additional proposals within the manifesto include defunding the Department of War and abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The document also contains more contentious foreign policy positions, such as eliminating the state of Israel and establishing Jerusalem as the capital of a "free Palestine."
