Members of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) have reportedly pledged support for the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) after participating in trips to China, according to a report in The Times of London. These trips, described as "VIP trips," were organized by the CCP and have led to pledges of support from some DSA members.

The DSA members' pledge stated, "Why China? We support all states building or aspiring to socialism, and we favor the highest level of unity and friendship between them. We foreground China in particular because its size and level of development give it an objectively critical role in the global transition to socialism."

Critics, however, argue that the DSA's embrace of China is based on ignorance of the country's authoritarian system. The report highlights China's extensive control mechanisms, including its military, police, and spy agencies, as well as its use of prisons and labor camps for those deemed "enemies of the state." The persecution of the Uyghur population is cited as an example of human rights abuses.

Furthermore, China's strict border controls and its centralized political system under President Xi Jinping, which consolidates power, are contrasted with the DSA's stated aims to abolish institutions like the presidency, Senate, and Supreme Court. The report also points out that China maintains significant control over its corporations, which runs counter to the DSA's stated opposition to corporate ownership.

Alexander Reid Ross, a professor at Portland State University, suggested that these trips are viewed by the CCP as significant vehicles for altering Western perceptions of China and exhibit "extraordinarily high-level coordination by the People’s Republic of China."

Discussion of the DSA's positions, including calls to "seize all properties from landlords" and "impoverish the White middle class," has also been highlighted by figures like HBO host Bill Maher. Maher critiqued what he described as the DSA's "destructive ignorance," pointing to statements made by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and other left-leaning commentators.

The report suggests that China prioritizes merit and experience in its leadership and security forces, contrasting this with the DSA's platform, which is accused of promoting "woke" and "identity politics" over merit. This has led to speculation that China may ultimately find DSA members to be less valuable recruits than initially perceived.
