The Los Angeles chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA-LA) is hosting a Y2K-themed prom on Friday night, combining 2000s pop culture nostalgia with a fundraising effort for its political activities. The event, scheduled from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. at Friendship Auditorium in Los Feliz, aims to support the chapter's work in areas such as fighting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), protecting tenants and workers, electing socialist candidates, and developing community-focused initiatives.
Organizers are promoting the prom with the slogan, "Do you hate capitalism but love to dress up?" Admission is offered on a pay-what-you-can basis, with suggested tiers ranging from $15 to $40 and above. The funds generated are designated to bolster the chapter's political campaigns and operational needs.
Attendees can expect music from the era, including 2000s R&B and pop-punk, along with a photo booth, DIY glitter tattoos, and a prom king and queen ceremony. The event's promotional materials have also highlighted its political alignment, with one video stating, "Do you want to shake it like a Polaroid picture with your girls? But all your girls believe in a free Palestine? Come to prom."
DSA-LA is minimizing event costs by utilizing volunteers for organization, coordination, decorations, and bartending. DJs and "celebrity chaperones" are being sourced from within the chapter or from allied local performers willing to contribute their services at no or reduced cost. Members are also contributing to the cost of supplies for activities like the photo booth and glitter tattoo stations through small chapter allocations or personal donations.
The venue choice also contributes to cost-saving. Friendship Auditorium, a city-owned facility managed by the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, is significantly less expensive to rent than private clubs. This lower overhead ensures a larger portion of the ticket revenue can be directed toward DSA-LA's political funds.
The chapter has established political connections within Los Angeles. City Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez (District 1) is an active DSA-LA member, and former District 13 Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martínez previously held a leadership position within the chapter. DSA-LA is also supporting several candidates in local elections, including Marissa Roy for Los Angeles city attorney, Estuardo Mazariegos for City Council District 9, and Faizah Malik for District 11. Nithya Raman, a DSA member, is also running for Los Angeles mayor.
