Gustavo Gordillo, co-chair of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) in New York City, indicated that the organization would be enthusiastic if Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) decided to run for president in 2028. Gordillo made the remarks on MS NOW Reports, where the host inquired about the DSA's involvement in the 2028 presidential election cycle, particularly following recent primary victories by DSA-backed candidates.

"I think that we will be trying to influence the next presidential primary," Gordillo stated. "And it’s still too soon to say how… to say who." He added, "You know, I think that many in the organization would be very thrilled if Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez ended up running, but ultimately that’s her decision, and we’ll be in conversation."

Ocasio-Cortez has not yet formally committed to a 2028 presidential run and has previously responded coyly when asked about her ambitions. When asked by Fox News Digital last month, she responded, "Could I be president? Could I not be president? Maybe, maybe not."

The comments come in the wake of several electoral successes for candidates endorsed by the DSA. On Tuesday, Melat Kiros, a 29-year-old first-time candidate endorsed by the DSA, defeated Rep. Diana DeGette (D-CO), who was first elected to Congress in 1996. This followed other recent victories, including Darializa Avila Chevalier, a progressive community organizer, unseating Rep. Adriano Espaillat (D-NY), chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, and state Assembly Member Claire Valdez, also aligned with the DSA, winning a congressional primary to succeed Rep. Nydia Velázquez.

Ocasio-Cortez has publicly supported these DSA-backed candidates. In a previous interview with MS NOW’s Jen Psaki, she encouraged Democratic members of Congress to offer greater support to candidates endorsed by the DSA. "I actually think the more important advice that I would give would be to my incumbent colleagues — which is you will create a self-fulfilling prophecy by deciding who these young women are before you’ve met them," Ocasio-Cortez said.
