Democratic Socialists Eye Control of Two Major US Cities

Los Angeles is positioned to mirror New York City's political landscape, with Nithya Raman, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), leading in the polls to become the city's next mayor. If Raman secures victory, DSA members would hold mayoral offices in the nation's two largest metropolitan areas. This development poses a challenge to Democratic Party leaders, raising questions about their control over the party's direction.

Mamdani, the current mayor of New York City, is noted for his charisma and social media presence. Raman, while possessing less public star power, benefits from opponents whose public approval ratings are low. A recent California Post poll indicated that 71.7% of Los Angeles voters disapproved of incumbent Mayor Karen Bass's performance. In the same poll, Raman led Bass 46.7% to 38.8%, despite a higher percentage of voters identifying Raman as the more extreme candidate.

The DSA's platform includes significant policy proposals such as abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement, ending deportations, and providing amnesty for undocumented immigrants. Domestically, the DSA advocates for universal healthcare, free public college tuition, and student debt cancellation, with a long-term goal of replacing capitalism with public ownership of corporations and essential industries.

The LA chapter of the DSA has also endorsed Raman and has its own set of local policy demands, including the repeal of ordinances that criminalize homeless encampments. The growing influence of DSA members in elected office presents a potential shift for the Democratic Party, which has historically benefited from the socialist left's activism without fully embracing its more radical policy objectives.

This shift is already being felt at the state level. New York Governor Kathy Hochul has navigated political pressure from within her own party, including challenges from left-leaning legislators supported by the DSA. Despite these internal party dynamics, Hochul and Mamdani have appeared together in campaign events, highlighting a complex interdependence as Hochul seeks re-election and Mamdani pursues his agenda that requires state-level support.

The electoral implications extend beyond city halls. A Data for Progress survey revealed a significant difference in Mamdani's favorability ratings between New York City residents and those in the suburbs, suggesting a potential challenge for Democrats in competitive districts. Republicans have experienced their own internal ideological battles, moving from traditional conservatism to national populism. Democrats are now facing a similar internal evolution, with potential consequences for national political aspirations.

Recent polling suggests that prominent DSA member Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is gaining traction in hypothetical 2028 presidential primary matchups, even surpassing figures like California Governor Gavin Newsom in his home state. The increasing political power of socialist activists, as evidenced by their electoral successes at the city level, suggests a potential reshaping of the Democratic Party's future.
