Following the Democratic Party's significant midterm election gains, Representative Robert Garcia, slated to become the ranking member of the House Oversight Committee, has declared that no member of the Trump family will be exempt from investigation. Garcia issued a stern warning for former President Donald Trump to "lawyer up," signaling a broad inquiry into alleged "grift" and potential corruption.
Garcia indicated that the scope of the investigations would extend to the former president's sons, Don Jr. and Eric, as well as son-in-law Jared Kushner. Specific areas of focus mentioned include family cryptocurrency ventures, the financing of projects such as the White House ballroom, and Trump's acceptance of a Qatari jet for travel.
"If you are part of that family, you have been involved in grift and we've seen that," Garcia told Aaron Parnas, citing Donald Trump Jr.'s wedding ceremony reportedly funded by a Russian oligarch. Garcia also suggested looking into Trump's sons' involvement on the boards of companies receiving Pentagon contracts. Kushner's business dealings with Saudi Arabia were also highlighted as a potential subject for investigation.
Garcia emphasized that these investigations are crucial for "accountability," linking them to the Democrats' midterm platform focused on "affordability." He argued that alleged corruption by the Trump family has harmed ordinary Americans struggling with the cost of living. "As people are struggling to pay the gas, to pay the groceries, to pay the rent, the Trumps are getting richer and they're connected. They're stealing from you to enrich themselves," Garcia stated.
The incoming Democratic chairs of House committees will possess subpoena power, allowing them to demand documents and funding for investigations starting in January. A Democratic congressional official confirmed that "anything that has to do with the Trump family is going to be looked at on day one," along with corporate corruption and alleged abuses by DHS and ICE. The continuation of the Epstein investigation was also mentioned.
White House officials have responded to the impending investigations. A White House spokesperson stated that the administration remains focused on working with Americans and warned that Democrats pursuing "sham investigations and radical left policies" would be acting against the American people. The statement also suggested that the federal government's powers remain under Republican control.
