Democrat Prosecutor Stephen Descano Faces Primary Challenge Over Record

Fairfax County Commonwealth's Attorney Stephen Descano is facing a primary challenge from within his own party. Brittany Dunn-Pirio, a former federal prosecutor, has announced her bid to unseat Descano, a Democrat, citing concerns over his prosecutorial record. Dunn-Pirio argues that Descano's office has exhibited systemic problems and made overly lenient decisions, particularly in cases involving illegal immigrant suspects.

"If this office were doing its job, I wouldn’t be running against it. I’d be applying to work for it. But it isn’t," Dunn-Pirio stated on her campaign website. She further clarified her stance as a Democrat, emphasizing that her challenge is not about reform itself, but about the office's ability to distinguish between first-time offenders deserving a second chance and violent or sexual offenders who do not. Dunn-Pirio also raised concerns about missed deadlines, evidence handling, and communication with victims.

Descano's campaign defended his tenure, with spokesman Nathan Kiker asserting that Descano has balanced justice reform with community safety. Kiker pointed to Fairfax County being recognized as the safest large county in the nation, attributing this to Descano's focus on accountability and crime's root causes, rather than past policies. "We are proud to put that record before the voters," Kiker said.

Dunn-Pirio also highlighted specific cases that have drawn scrutiny, including the case of Abdul Jalloh, an illegal immigrant from Sierra Leone charged with the murder of Stephanie Minter. Jalloh had reportedly been through the criminal justice system multiple times prior to the stabbing death. Descano has previously pushed back on similar criticisms, telling Congress that his prosecutors pursued convictions against Jalloh whenever possible.

Dunn-Pirio's background includes service as a prosecutor in Frederick County, Virginia, and as a federal prosecutor in Kentucky. She resigned from the Department of Justice in 2025, stating she could no longer tolerate a system she perceived as offering pardons to the well-connected while prosecuting average citizens for similar conduct. She aims to unseat Descano, who is associated with George Soros's network of prosecutors.

Descano, who is Soros-backed, has faced criticism from opponents who describe his approach as too lenient, especially concerning illegal immigrants charged with serious crimes. Dunn-Pirio, who describes herself as a lifelong Democrat, intends to contrast her candidacy with challenges from the political right.

The Democratic nomination contest will determine who advances to face potential Republican opposition in the 2027 election. Republicans currently hold only one seat on the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors.
