Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, D-Wash., has won re-election, defeating Republican state Sen. John Braun in Washington's 3rd Congressional District. The victory is significant for House Democrats as they seek to regain a majority in Congress. The district, which includes rural areas, coastal towns, and the city of Vancouver, was carried by former President Donald Trump by approximately 3 percentage points in 2024.
Gluesenkamp Perez, known for occasionally diverging from her party's positions, drew criticism from Democratic leadership in September after siding with Republicans on two procedural votes. These votes were crucial in allowing GOP leaders to advance their agenda, circumventing conservative opposition within their own party. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., publicly rebuked Gluesenkamp Perez for what he called a "breach of trust." Some progressive lawmakers suggested she should be removed from the House Appropriations Committee.
However, these independent actions may have aided her political survival in a district that has shown Republican leanings. Gluesenkamp Perez previously won her seat by unseating an incumbent Republican. Her opponent this cycle, Braun, is a former Navy captain and co-owner of Braun Northwest, a manufacturer of emergency vehicles. Their race saw over $20 million in spending, indicating its critical importance to both parties.
Previous challenges in the district, such as the one Gluesenkamp Perez faced from Joe Kent, were influenced by his association with far-right groups. Kent later served as Trump's director of the United States National Counterterrorism Center before resigning. Braun, in contrast, ran as a more mainstream Republican candidate, making the race more competitive than in prior elections.
