U.S. Representative Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, who represents Washington's Trump-friendly 3rd Congressional District, had a past that included presiding over events described as a "Latex Fetish Ball," nude frolics, and an alleged LSD giveaway during her college years, according to reports from The California Post.
While attending the liberal arts school Reed College in Portland, Oregon, Perez served as a student senator and headed the finance committee in 2012. During this time, student senate posts indicated Perez secured approximately $4,000 for a "Fetish Ball" hosted by the school's Fetish Club. This event reportedly featured a DJ and a "dark room." The Fetish Club also offered courses such as BDSM 201, which covered topics like "flogging and caning, violet wand, and basic rope bondage," and a "kinky crafts" course on creating bondage gear.
Perez also advocated for funding for the Renn Fayre, an annual campus festival known for a nude jog by students who referred to themselves as "Picts," who displayed their genitals while body-painted. Reed College has a reputation for a permissive drug culture, with a student-authored guide to various substances circulating in 2008.
According to reports, Perez's student senate also promoted an "LSD giveaway" in 2012 and an event called "Nitrogen Day," where students reportedly used nitrous oxide, also known as "whippets."
Further allegations from former roommates described Perez as a "dumpster diver" who offered spoiled food in exchange for rent and lived in a "crawl space." One former associate, Isaac Eger, claimed Perez attempted to barter old fruit and meat for rent payments of $50 to $75 per month. Eger also alleged that Perez once decapitated a chicken as part of an urban farming experiment.
Another former associate, investigative journalist Dan Boguslaw, claimed Perez sold "extremely low-quality weed" out of a van after graduating and allegedly moved large quantities of cannabis around the Reed campus.
Perez graduated from Reed College in 2012. After college, she served on the Washington Democrats Executive Committee, supporting a platform that included decriminalizing drugs and sex work. In 2022, Perez won her congressional seat by flipping the rural district, defeating Republican Joe Kent. She later faced criticism from progressives for voting to fund the Department of Homeland Security, including $10 billion for ICE, stating it was crucial for her community and she could not in good conscience vote to shut it down.
Perez is currently in a reelection campaign against Republican state senate minority leader John Braun.
