Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner is facing mounting pressure to withdraw from the race following a recent allegation of sexual assault. The accusations have prompted a re-examination of endorsements from prominent Democrats, including Senator Elizabeth Warren and the hosts of the "Pod Save America" podcast, who previously supported Platner despite a series of earlier controversies.

Senator Warren, who had previously described Platner as "my kind of man," issued a statement calling for him to step aside. "Now more than ever we need leaders in Washington who reflect our values. There can be no tolerance for sexual assault," Warren stated. She added that "the best path forward is for Graham Platner to step aside as the Democratic nominee and address these serious allegations outside this Senate race."

Platner has also faced scrutiny for past scandals, including resurfaced Reddit posts containing sexually explicit messages, a tattoo with alleged Nazi links, and mocking comments directed at a Purple Heart veteran. Last month, he also faced accusations of physical misconduct from a former girlfriend. Prior to the most recent allegations, some progressive figures and media personalities had defended Platner, citing him as the Democratic Party's best chance to unseat Republican Senator Susan Collins. However, in the wake of the rape accusation, many of these same individuals have reversed their positions.

Jon Favreau, a host of "Pod Save America," who had previously called Platner "a good, decent man," now stated, "Platner needs to drop out ASAP - these are awful, credible allegations." Co-host Tommy Vietor echoed this sentiment, calling the story "very bad, well-documented and credible" and urging Platner to withdraw "as soon as possible so that Maine democrats can get a replacement on the ballot." Fellow hosts Dan Pfeiffer and Jon Lovett also called for Platner to exit the race.

Senator Bernie Sanders, who had previously expressed strong support for Platner's candidacy, has not yet publicly commented on the rape allegations. His office did not respond to requests for comment.

Other prominent Democrats, including Representative Ro Khanna, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, and Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Chair Kirsten Gillibrand, have also called for Platner to withdraw. The situation has placed significant figures within the Democratic Party in a difficult position, as their prior endorsements are now being viewed critically in light of the serious allegations against Platner.

Senator Elizabeth Warren is seen asking questions of Kevin Warsh during his confirmation hearing.
