Democrat Endorses Republican Ally in Tight New York Race, Signaling Shifting Alliances

New York Republican Mike Lawler faces a challenging re-election campaign in a district that previously leaned Democratic, but he has received a significant endorsement from an unexpected ally: Maine Democrat Jared Golden.
Golden, an outgoing Democratic colleague, publicly backed Lawler in an op-ed published in Lawler's hometown newspaper, The Journal News. He praised Lawler for his ability to work across the aisle, stating, "Mike Lawler has been a true partner to me and a friend to fishing families he will never represent. I strongly back him, and I hope voters send him back to work."
The endorsement comes as Lawler's district, located in the lower Hudson Valley, is considered a "toss-up" by The Cook Political Report. Lawler secured his previous victory in 2024 with 52.1 percent of the vote.
Lawler has aligned himself with former President Donald Trump, receiving a speaking slot at the Republican Midterm Convention in Dallas earlier this month. Trump had previously campaigned with Lawler in May, commending his bipartisan efforts.
Earlier this summer, Lawler disclosed a DWI arrest from over 12 years prior. A police report detailed reckless driving, including speeding and unsafe lane changes, with a blood-alcohol content nearly double the legal limit. His opponent, Cait Conley, has not heavily emphasized this issue during the campaign.
Golden's endorsement is not the only instance of a Democrat breaking ranks in recent weeks. Pennsylvania Democratic Senator John Fetterman recently provided a video address at the Republican midterm convention, praising Republican Dave McCormick and noting his willingness to work with President Trump on issues relevant to the steel industry in their home state.
