Senator Ed Markey, D-Mass., asserted on Wednesday that Republicans "stole" two Supreme Court seats in 2016 and 2020, leading to their current majority, and is advocating for an expansion of the court.

Markey, who has authored legislation to increase the number of justices, stated that the Republican Party's actions gave them a "supermajority." He proposed adding four seats to the Supreme Court, bringing the total to 13 justices. According to Markey, this expansion would restore a "seven-to-six majority" that he believes should already exist.

"The only way to solve this problem in a very short period of time is expand the Supreme Court by four seats up to 13," Markey said during an appearance on MS NOW. "That would then restore the seven-to-six majority, which should be in place right now."

He emphasized that such a change could be accomplished through legislation and does not require a constitutional amendment. "That has to be at the top of the agenda. And that's what I'm talking to my colleagues about right now," he added.

Markey's comments come as the Supreme Court has recently issued rulings on significant cases. On Tuesday, the court struck down former President Donald Trump's effort to end birthright citizenship in a 6-3 vote. The justices also ruled in favor of state bans on transgender athletes in women's and girl's sports and struck down federal regulations limiting political party contributions to federal candidates.

The concept of "court packing" or reform has been a recurring theme among some Democrats in response to rulings they oppose. In April, Democratic strategist James Carville suggested that if Democrats gained control of the presidency and both houses of Congress, they should immediately admit Puerto Rico and D.C. as states and expand the Supreme Court to 13 justices.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries also indicated in April that "everything is on the table" regarding the Supreme Court. Speaking to MeidasTouch host Ben Meiselas, Jeffries stated, "We're going to have to do something about this Supreme Court. And let me be very clear: everything is on the table."

He further characterized the current Supreme Court majority as "corrupt MAGA majority that is issuing political opinions that are designed to bolster the prospects of the Republican Party, and we will not allow them to succeed."

Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., has also publicly called for court reform on social media.
