Democrat Abdul El-Sayed, a rising figure in progressive politics, is facing criticism following the resurfacing of a 2018 video clip in which he expressed negative sentiments about Mackinac Island, a popular Michigan vacation destination.
In the clip, El-Sayed, who was then running for governor, is heard lamenting the idea of spending time on the island, which serves as the official summer residence for the state's chief executive. "It’s funny cause, like, if we win, this is gonna be, like, the summer home. I’m just gonna be like every time I’ve ever come here. I’ve hated it. Why am I here?" he said.
El-Sayed recently won the Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate seat in Michigan, raising significant funds in the days following his victory. However, the unearthed remarks have become a point of contention.
His Republican opponent, Mike Rogers, has actively used the comments against El-Sayed, posting images of himself and his wife enjoying Mackinac Island. Rogers' campaign has framed the controversy as a contrast between himself and what they characterize as El-Sayed's "socialist" stance.
El-Sayed has responded to the criticism by questioning the island's status as "the most American place in Michigan," citing its long-standing ban on cars. "Not sure about 'End Wokeness,' but I don’t think the most 'American place in MI' can be a place that…bans cars," he stated, referencing Michigan's historical association with the automotive industry. Cars have been prohibited on Mackinac Island since the 1890s, with transportation limited to walking, cycling, and horse-drawn carriages.
Republicans have expressed a desire to face El-Sayed in the general election. Jessica Anderson, president of the Sentinel Action Fund, which is supporting Rogers, stated that the matchup should make the choice clear in November, pitting "a far-Left socialist" against "an America First leader."
The race for the Michigan Senate seat is considered crucial for control of the Senate. Republicans have not won a U.S. Senate race in Michigan since 1994. Rogers narrowly lost a bid for the Senate in 2024. The Democratic primary was closer than some polls predicted, with El-Sayed's lead narrowing as votes were counted.
Despite his primary victory and fundraising success, some Democratic strategists have expressed concerns about El-Sayed's ability to build a broad enough coalition to win in the general election in a state that President Biden won in 2020.
