DeMeco Ryans Takes Over Texans' Defensive Play-Calling Amid Struggles
Houston's head coach assumes play-calling duties in an effort to improve the team's defensive performance after a 0-4 start.
Houston Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans will take over defensive play-calling responsibilities from defensive coordinator Matt Burke. The change comes after the team's 0-4 start to the season, marked by significant defensive struggles.
"If there’s a lack in communication, I look at myself first. It starts with me, and making sure I’m a better communicator," Ryans stated during a press conference. "To help spark things more, I’m going to take over the play calling for the defense and I’m going to make sure that communication is right."
Ryans emphasized that the decision was not a reflection of Burke's performance, saying, ". No shade against coach Burke — he’s done an outstanding job. I just want to make sure I can streamline communication in the best way possible."
The Texans' defense has seen a notable decline in performance compared to the previous season. Through the first four weeks, Houston has allowed an average of 27.3 points and 343.8 yards per game. In the prior season, the defense yielded just 17.3 points and 271.9 yards per game, ranking second and first in the league, respectively.
Despite returning 10 of its 11 primary defensive starters from last year, the team has struggled to replicate its previous success. Burke joined Ryans' staff as defensive coordinator in 2023 after Ryans was hired as head coach. Interestingly, Burke also took over defensive play-calling duties during Week 4 of last season when the Texans experienced another slow start.
The Texans are set to face the winless Tennessee Titans on Sunday, with Ryans now directly overseeing the defensive strategy as the team seeks its first victory of the season.
