Demario Davis Expresses Confidence in Jets' Process Amidst Losing Streak
Veteran linebacker insists the team is doing the right things and will not waver despite a 1-3 start.
Despite the New York Jets' current 1-3 record and a three-game losing streak, veteran linebacker and team captain Demario Davis remains confident in the team's process and resilience. Davis stated that the sense of urgency has not changed and that the team is focused on improving its execution.
"The sense of urgency isn’t changing, and that’s when you know you’re doing the right [things]. If you need to change your process when things are going wrong, that means you weren’t doing the right things early on, and that’s one of the good things about this organization," Davis said after practice Thursday. "Two things that this group is going to do: It’s not going to flinch, it’s not going to waver. We haven’t gotten the results that we wanted, but we’re not going to flinch.
We got the right guys that are resilient. But we’re also not going to waver. We’re not going to change our process. We’re just going to do the little things a little bit better, and that’s what we’re working towards."
The Jets have struggled since an opening week win, most recently suffering a decisive 23-12 loss to the Chicago Bears. In that game, the Bears dominated statistically, running 89 plays to the Jets' 32 and outgaining them 492-157. This performance has led to external criticism, with some questioning the direction of the team under coach Aaron Glenn.
However, Davis, a five-time All-Pro, maintains that the team's approach is sound and focused on building a sustainable winning culture. "Our process doesn’t change. It’s the right way," Davis asserted. "I’ve been around a lot of programs, and we’re doing the things that lead to winning. Unfortunately, we haven’t gotten those results on Sunday. But we continue to sharpen the process. We continue to come back to work and we work the right way.
When you’re trying to build a sustainable winning organization, you have to be able to make those plays in those moments, and that’s what we’re working to do. We have enough guys in this room that can make those plays."
Davis acknowledged that the defense was initially surprised by the recent outcomes after a strong start to the season. He noted that while the team achieved four takeaways against the Bears, three were nullified by penalties. Despite the external noise and the team's current record, Davis indicated that his focus, and that of his teammates, is squarely on the upcoming game against the Cleveland Browns. "With this group," he said, "we’re going to respond the right way."
