Dem Megadonor Casts Doubt on Harris' 2028 Chances, Eyes Ocasio-Cortez

Reid Hoffman, a prominent Democratic megadonor and co-founder of LinkedIn, has voiced skepticism about Vice President Kamala Harris' prospects for another presidential run in 2028. In contrast, Hoffman expressed openness to supporting progressive firebrand Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., for a potential 2028 bid, describing her as "pragmatic."

During POLITICO's Decoded Summit on Wednesday, Hoffman stated that another presidential run for Harris would present a "very challenging path" and anticipated a crowded Democratic field.

"It depends a little bit," Hoffman said when asked about potentially backing Ocasio-Cortez in 2028. "I think she's much more pragmatic than people give her credit for."

Hoffman, who contributed millions to Harris' 2024 campaign, previously characterized her in 2024 as "a great centrist" who cared about both society and business. His recent comments contrast with his earlier strong support for Harris.

Hoffman outlined qualities he would seek in a candidate, stating, "If you're basically kind of pro-society, which she is, and pro-business, which is a question, that tends to be where I think the right focal points are."

Hoffman's remarks come shortly after California Gov. Gavin Newsom stated he would not run for president in 2028 if Harris entered the race. Republican strategist Mark Bednar suggested these developments could signal uncertainty about Harris' position within the Democratic Party's potential 2028 contenders.
