Delta Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Portugal Due to Cabin Smoke
Four passengers were hospitalized after a Delta Airlines flight from Barcelona to Boston diverted to Porto, Portugal, due to smoke in the cabin.
Four people were taken to the hospital and approximately a dozen others received oxygen mid-flight after a Delta Airlines Airbus A330 experienced smoke in its cabin, forcing an emergency landing.
The flight, identified as Delta flight 251, had departed from Barcelona and was en route to Boston when the crew initiated an unscheduled diversion to Porto, Portugal. The plane was carrying 296 passengers.
Emergency services, including firefighters, police, and ambulances, were mobilized in Porto in anticipation of the aircraft's arrival. Following the landing, 14 individuals received medical attention, with four subsequently transported to a local hospital. Sao Joao Hospital in Porto confirmed that two men were admitted to the emergency department for smoke inhalation, reporting mild respiratory symptoms and stable conditions.
A Delta spokesperson stated that the diversion was due to a reported mechanical issue and apologized to customers for the travel delay, assuring that the airline was working to transport passengers to Boston safely and quickly.
Normal operations at Porto Airport were briefly impacted by the incident. The alert was reportedly sounded around 5:30 p.m. local time.
