Delta Expands Free In-Flight Wi-Fi to Asia-Pacific Routes
SkyMiles members can now access complimentary internet on long-haul flights across the region, with 95% of the fleet equipped.

Delta Air Lines has extended its free in-flight Wi-Fi service to include long-haul routes across the Asia-Pacific region for its SkyMiles members. This expansion means that 95% of Delta's fleet, comprising nearly 1,300 aircraft, is now equipped with complimentary internet access.
According to Ranjan Goswami, Delta's chief marketing and product officer, this move addresses the final gap in the airline's Wi-Fi coverage, ensuring internet availability for passengers on all routes. The free Wi-Fi is available regardless of cabin class, provided passengers are enrolled in the free SkyMiles program.
While coverage is now comprehensive, minor limitations may occur. A roughly 45-minute connectivity gap is expected over Alaska, and in South Korea and Hong Kong, Wi-Fi usage is restricted at altitudes below 10,000 feet. Delta anticipates completing the installation of Wi-Fi on its remaining regional jets and Boeing 717 aircraft by 2027.
Delta reported that over 70% of travelers utilized the free Wi-Fi during the initial week of its rollout across the Pacific. The airline has seen significant growth in its SkyMiles membership since launching its Wi-Fi system, Delta Sync, in 2023, attracting 6 million new members.
The expansion places Delta in a competitive landscape for in-flight connectivity. United Airlines is actively deploying Starlink Wi-Fi across its fleet, with over 635 aircraft already equipped. However, United continues to charge for Wi-Fi on flights utilizing older hardware, with fees varying for MileagePlus members and non-members. United aims to provide free internet access to all members once its fleet-wide upgrades are completed by the end of 2027.
American Airlines offers free Wi-Fi for its AAdvantage members on most domestic flights, but long-haul international routes and some regional jets may still require payment or lack complimentary access. Delta is also planning further technological enhancements, including upgrading its satellite technology for improved speed and reliability, and integrating Amazon's LEO satellite connectivity, Amazon Leo, in 2028.
