A delivery rider was apprehended with a six-inch knife after being stopped by police for disregarding a red light in London. Bodycam footage shows Ridwan Abdilahi, 23, ignoring the traffic signal on September 8 while riding a delivery bike in Bishopsgate, City of London.
As Abdilahi, wearing an Ocado jacket, pulled over near a police officer shortly before 5 p.m., he argued that the light had just turned red. The officer then instructed him to move his bike to the side of the road. Abdilahi then attempted to flee but was restrained by the officer.
A subsequent search of Abdilahi's coat revealed a flick knife. When questioned about his attempt to evade police, he stated he was on his way to meet his girlfriend and was experiencing issues with a female.
Abdilahi was arrested and charged with possession of a bladed article, failing to stop for police, and running a red light on a bicycle. He pleaded guilty to these offenses in court and has been remanded in custody pending sentencing.
Sergeant Sibyl Beaumont of the City of London Police's Cycle Team commented on the incident, stating that the individual might not have been caught if not for officers proactively patrolling and stopping those committing traffic offenses. She added that Abdilahi's agitated behavior and attempt to flee raised suspicion, leading to the discovery of the weapon. Sergeant Beaumont emphasized the importance of proactive policing and the Safer City Streets initiative in identifying offenders, removing weapons, and preventing more serious crimes.
