Delivery Cyclist Fatally Struck by Dump Truck in Manhattan Hit-and-Run
A delivery woman on an e-bike was killed in Herald Square after a dump truck driver collided with her and fled the scene, authorities said.
A delivery woman was killed in Manhattan's Herald Square on Monday morning when a dump truck struck her e-bike and the driver fled the scene. The collision occurred around 10:50 a.m. as both the cyclist and the truck were traveling west on West 34th Street near Seventh Avenue, an area adjacent to prominent retail locations like Primark and Macy's flagship store.
Authorities confirmed that the 50-year-old cyclist, who was making a delivery on a JOCO rental e-bike, was pronounced dead at the scene. The dump truck driver continued west on West 34th Street after the collision.
A witness, who requested anonymity, told AM NY that the incident drew a crowd of onlookers. "The truck came, and the bike was here, and the truck served and hit them," the witness stated. "I was across the street. I was down. I was walking, and I saw it, and that’s when everybody started running out, crowding and stuff."
Hours after the incident, police located the dump truck driver, who was questioned. However, as of Monday afternoon, no charges had been filed against the driver.
The advocacy organization Transportation Alternatives expressed its grief and concern over the incident. "We’re horrified and heartbroken that another bike rider is dead," the group said in a statement. "This is the 20th bike rider killed on our streets this year — the 20th New Yorker whose community is now grieving a sudden and preventable loss."
The organization highlighted that a City Council hearing on e-bikes was scheduled to take place within two days. "Seventeen New Yorkers on e-bikes have been killed on our streets so far this year, and our city’s leaders should be doing everything in their power to ensure safety on our streets," Transportation Alternatives added.
This fatal collision occurred shortly after other recent traffic fatalities in the city. Last week, a 68-year-old pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run incident involving a suspected Lamborghini. Earlier in September, a 77-year-old e-scooter rider died after a collision with a bicyclist in Downtown Brooklyn.
