DeKalb County Sheriff-Elect Murdered Weeks After Election Victory
Derwin Brown was shot 16 times in his driveway just months after defeating the incumbent sheriff amid allegations of corruption.
Derwin Brown, the sheriff-elect of DeKalb County, Georgia, was fatally shot 16 times in his driveway on a cold and rainy night, weeks after his electoral victory.
The 46-year-old was walking up his driveway when the attack occurred, with 12 bullets striking him out of a total of 16 fired. Brown had recently defeated the incumbent sheriff, Sidney Dorsey, in a runoff election that was heavily influenced by allegations of corruption against Dorsey.
Brown was assassinated clutching a bouquet of roses, intended as a gift for his wife's birthday, which was the following day. His wife, Phyllis, had also ordered a specially tailored sheriff uniform for him as a surprise.
Twenty months after Brown's assassination, the former Sheriff, Sidney Dorsey, was convicted on RICO charges and murder.
