Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has made his wife, Jennifer Hegseth, a near-constant presence in his professional life, a development that has reportedly caused unease within the Pentagon. According to a New York Times report, Jennifer Hegseth has become an influential advisor, involved in interviewing staff, shaping public appearances, and even attending press interviews with her husband.

This close involvement is reportedly linked to concerns over Secretary Hegseth's past struggles with alcohol abuse. Sources cited in the report suggest he relies on his wife's supervision to prevent issues. The report details an incident during a sensitive U.S. and U.K. briefing on military intelligence sharing with Ukraine, where British officials felt uncomfortable with Jennifer Hegseth's presence, leading to a follow-up meeting held without her.

Concerns about Secretary Hegseth's history of drinking and accusations of alcohol abuse reportedly contributed to a challenging confirmation process. His reliance on his wife's oversight is seen as a direct consequence of these past issues. One former Pentagon official, John Ullyot, who resigned after three months, described his encounter with Jennifer Hegseth as an "unexpectedly detailed and hard-edged" questioning session, and told The Times that the involvement of a defense secretary's wife in sensitive duties raises questions about judgment.

Joel Valdez, a spokesperson for the Department of Defense, countered Ullyot's criticism, while lead Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell defended Jennifer Hegseth, calling her "an accomplished leader in her own right and a devoted military spouse." Parnell added that the department "welcomes her current leadership but actively plans to involve her even more deeply in the future."

Secretary Hegseth himself has spoken about his wife's impact. In a 2024 interview, he stated, "My Jenny, my wife, Jennifer, changed my life, saved me, there's just no doubt about it. And without those two Js, I wouldn't be sitting here right now," referring to his wife and his faith.

Jennifer Hegseth met her husband in 2016 while both worked at Fox News, at a time when they were both married to other people. They married in 2019.
