Jurors at Cambridge Crown Court heard chilling testimony Tuesday about the demeanor of Anthony Williams as he attacked 10 passengers on a train, with one witness describing the defendant as having "the greatest delight on his face." Williams, 33, is on trial for 14 counts of attempted murder, though he admits to intending to cause serious harm to his victims.
Prosecutors allege Williams began a spree of violence on Oct. 31, 2023, when he stabbed a 14-year-old boy in Peterborough. The following day, he attacked a 17-year-old on the Docklands Light Railway in east London before boarding an LNER train from Doncaster to London. He carried a large kitchen knife and a bottle of fortified tonic wine onto the train.
Onboard the train, Williams marched through several carriages, attacking passengers. Raza Aslam, a car delivery driver, told officers he saw Williams approaching and observed "the greatest delight on his face, I saw his eyes expand with pleasure." Aslam added, "I saw the contempt on his face… like a person who's high. He was just loving every single moment… he loved seeing us in desperation."
Mr. Aslam attempted to intervene with a frying pan, but Williams stabbed him in the hand. Train worker Samir Zitouni reportedly tried to slow Williams down using a "defensive blockade" of items including frying pans and a toaster.
Another passenger, Stephen Crean, a football fan who had boarded the train at Grantham, Lincolnshire, recounted seeing a young girl scream about a man with a large knife. Mr. Crean confronted Williams, reportedly saying, "I went for the knife… to stop him cause he's on a mission." Williams asked Mr. Crean, "Do you want to die?" before stabbing him multiple times in the head, back, fingers, and hip.
David Presland, 73, told police he "thought he was going to die" when Williams approached him with the knife. Knocked to the floor, Mr. Presland was stabbed in the back. Footage shown to the jury depicted Mr. Presland's hand in a "pitiful and pleading fashion" as the attack continued. He sustained wounds including a punctured lung.
Kevin Deely also intervened, shouting at Williams and throwing an object at him. He helped Mr. Presland move away, only realizing afterward that he had also been stabbed. Mr. Deely suffered a lacerated liver from a deep wound to his abdominal wall.
Scott Green was reportedly defended by his dog, Poppy, which barked aggressively at Williams, causing the defendant to retreat. Mr. Green sustained injuries to his hand while trying to grab the knife and also a wound to his back. He described the scene as "literally just carnage."
In the midst of the violence, a woman bundled Mr. Green into a toilet, making a lighthearted remark that he believes saved his life.
The onslaught ended when the train driver initiated an unscheduled stop at Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, where Williams was arrested. Footage played in court showed passengers fleeing in terror, hiding in toilets, store cabinets, or under seats. Some attempted to defend themselves and others using household items.
Williams is appearing in court via video link from Rampton Hospital. The trial is ongoing.
