Deer Rescued After Antlers Get Tangled in Long Island Hammock

A deer on Long Island had to be rescued after its antlers became entangled in a hammock, with video capturing the dramatic intervention. Frank Floridia, president of the Strong Island Animal Rescue League, responded to a call from a homeowner Friday in Lake Grove.

Video footage shows Floridia, wearing what is described as an antler-proof vest, carefully using scissors to cut away the netting. The deer, initially distressed, gradually calms as it is freed and then runs off from the property.

This incident highlights a recurring issue for local wildlife. Floridia stated that he has rescued five Long Island deer from similar entanglements this month alone. He urged homeowners to remove outdoor equipment, such as hammocks and athletic nets, when not in use to prevent such occurrences.

"Homeowners should take caution that due to all the construction going on that deer are more frequently ending up in backyards," Floridia said. "Hammocks and athletic equipment such as volleyball, soccer and lacrosse nets are a great danger to bucks and male deer that will most likely get their antlers tangled in them."

Floridia, who is licensed and trained in animal rescue, described these situations as precarious. He noted the significant danger to both the animal and the rescuer, as a stressed deer can suffer a heart attack, and a rescuer risks being trampled or impaled by antlers.
