Deep Purple has canceled two concerts in Germany due to a medical emergency involving lead singer Ian Gillan, 81. The band announced the cancellations via Instagram on Saturday, expressing disappointment that the shows in Leipzig and Hamburg could not proceed as planned.
"Deep Purple and their team are focused on finding a suitable time to reschedule both these shows," the band stated, assuring fans that all purchased tickets would remain valid for the new dates. The nature of Gillan's "medical emergency" has not been specified, but the announcement comes after he previously discussed potential retirement due to vision issues.
Last year, Gillan told Uncut magazine that he had "only 30 percent vision," which made tasks like working on his laptop challenging. At that time, he indicated that retirement was "not far off" if he lost his energy for touring, but he later clarified in June that his failing eyesight would not stop him from singing. He maintained he would retire when he no longer had the strength or if it became embarrassing.
The band's current lineup includes Roger Glover (bass, 80), Ian Paice (drums, 78), Don Airey (keyboards, 78), and Simon McBride (guitar, 47). Paice is the only original member remaining from the band's formation in 1968. Gillan joined Deep Purple in 1969.
The band's SPLAT! World Tour is scheduled to continue through December, with a final concert planned for June 2027 in Poland. Just two days before the cancellation announcement, Deep Purple shared a video clip of the band performing in Oslo, with Gillan appearing energetic.
Deep Purple, known for hits like "Smoke on the Water" and "Highway Star," has been touring globally for decades. The band's extensive tour history and Gillan's long tenure have made them a consistent presence in the rock music scene.
