Dee Salmin, girlfriend of Collingwood captain Darcy Moore, has announced she will not attend the 2026 Brownlow Medal count, citing concerns over the AFL's culture and its handling of gender-based violence. The decision comes in the wake of a scandal involving Sydney Swans players.
Salmin, a presenter for Triple J radio, expressed her discomfort with attending an event that she feels does not align with her values. In a lengthy post on her Substack page, she stated, "I haven't made this decision thinking my absence will be noticed, or a big deal, but as someone who believes in leading with your values I just don't feel comfortable being at an event that doesn't align with mine." She added that while she respects individuals within the sport, "the entire culture is above criticism" and "when it comes to the AFL's attitude towards women and gender-based violence, there needs to be some serious change."
On Tuesday, Salmin clarified that her previous comments regarding the "culture surrounding AFL" were "taken out of context" by some. She explained in an Instagram video that her initial statement was prompted by repeated questions about her fashion choices for the awards ceremony, especially after attending the previous year. She emphasized that her decision was personal and rooted in her belief in examining the systems individuals participate in.
The Sydney Swans players Chad Warner, Isaac Heeney, Nick Blakey, James Jordon, and Riley Bice were suspended for the remainder of the 2026 season after the club determined they breached behavioral standards following a night out in Melbourne. The incident involved alleged misconduct at the Pullman East Melbourne hotel, including the invitation of strippers. Following this, three women reportedly made statements to Victoria Police alleging sexual assault.
Swans CEO Matthew Pavlich stated that the club's suspensions were for breaches of team rules, not a judgment on the criminal accusations. Several club officials, including coach Dean Cox, have reportedly provided statements to the police. The five suspended players issued a joint apology, acknowledging their behavior fell short of club standards.
The scandal has resulted in the players being banned from the Brownlow Medal ceremony and their AFL seasons being concluded. Salmin, who has been in a relationship with Moore since 2023, was seen running errands in Melbourne appearing downcast following her announcement.
