Bruno Guimaraes has shared that Declan Rice playfully requested an end to their on-field rivalry after Guimaraes completed his £75 million transfer to Arsenal. Rice sent Guimaraes a message stating, "Come here and please no more fights, now we're friends," as the two midfielders are set to partner each other at the Emirates Stadium.
The pair have been involved in several intense encounters on the pitch during matches between Arsenal and Newcastle. One notable incident in November 2023 saw the referee intervene to separate Guimaraes and Rice during a physical exchange that was sparked by Guimaraes kicking the ball at Kai Havertz.
Guimaraes expressed his excitement about joining Arsenal's midfield, which he considers one of the best in Europe, citing teammates like Martin Zubimendi, Mikel Merino, and Martin Odegaard. He also noted his anticipation of linking up with his Brazilian compatriots Gabriel, Gabriel Martinelli, and Gabriel Jesus, though the latter's future at the club is uncertain.
"Big Gabi was very excited," Guimaraes added. "Every time he sent me the message, 'We’ll wait for you, when will you come?' I’m so excited to join them, not only the Brazilians."
Guimaraes' arrival marks Arsenal's fourth signing of the transfer window, with the club also making Piero Hincapie's loan move permanent and signing Christos Tzolis and Illan Meslier. This brings Arsenal's summer spending to approximately £145 million as they aim to build upon their recent Premier League title and Champions League final appearance.
Guimaraes joined Newcastle from Lyon in 2022 and was later appointed captain. He was instrumental in Newcastle winning their first major trophy in 70 years in 2025, captaining the side to victory over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final.
Describing his departure from Newcastle as one of the most difficult decisions of his life, Guimaraes stated his need for a new challenge and his desire to win trophies and make history, believing Arsenal is the right place for this pursuit.
Arsenal's sporting director, Andrea Berta, welcomed Guimaraes, highlighting his strong mentality, quality, and leadership potential. Berta emphasized that Guimaraes will strengthen the team's midfield, offering versatility as both a defensive and box-to-box player, and contributing goals and assists. He also noted that Guimaraes will help develop the team's playing style and increase internal competition, which is crucial for meeting the club's high standards and trophy ambitions.
