Declan Donnelly has described an incident in which he accidentally shoplifted from a Marks & Spencer store at Bridgwater Services, recounting his fear of being arrested.
The television presenter, 50, shared the experience on a recent episode of his podcast with co-host Ant McPartlin. Donnelly explained that the event occurred as he was driving back from a holiday in Cornwall with his wife, Ali Astall.
Donnelly stated that they stopped at the services to take a break and purchase sandwiches. He selected several items, including a sandwich, crisps, and a chocolate treat, and proceeded to the self-service checkout. After scanning the items and his loyalty card, he placed everything into a bag and left without completing the payment.
It was only when he was back in the car and had begun eating his egg, bacon, and maple sandwich that he realized he had not paid for the items. He informed his wife, who expressed surprise at the situation.
Seeking to rectify the mistake, Donnelly attempted to contact the services store directly but was unable to get through. He then contacted his team to explain the situation. He conveyed his concern that he might be arrested, believing the store would recognize him due to his public profile.
Donnelly's team reportedly contacted the services store. According to Donnelly, the store acknowledged his honesty but stated there was nothing they could do at that point other than suggest he make a donation to their partner charity. Donnelly subsequently made a donation that exceeded the cost of the items he had inadvertently taken, resulting in him being slightly out of pocket.
McPartlin humorously remarked on the situation, joking that M&S would no longer be a sponsor of their podcast.
