Debra Messing Faces Backlash for Endorsing Republican Governor Candidate
The "Will & Grace" star cited concerns over affordability and safety in New York, a departure from her long-standing Democratic affiliation.
Actress Debra Messing, long known as a devout Democrat, has drawn significant criticism for publicly endorsing Republican Bruce Blakeman, a candidate for New York Governor. Blakeman, who has received the backing of former President Donald Trump, is set to challenge the incumbent Democratic governor, Kathy Hochul.
Messing, 58, explained her decision in a lengthy Instagram statement, citing concerns about the rising cost of living and increasing public safety issues in New York City and the state. She stated that while her core principles regarding issues like reproductive rights, voting rights, and LGBTQ+ equality remain unchanged, her perspective on the state of her home has shifted.
"I have also become increasingly concerned about public safety. The violence we see on our streets and subways frightens me," Messing wrote. She also expressed unease about the security measures now required at houses of worship, referencing an incident at her own synagogue. "The level of security we now need simply to pray does not feel normal to me."
Messing acknowledged that she does not agree with Blakeman on all issues, but believes he is the right choice for addressing the immediate problems facing New Yorkers. She clarified that her support for Blakeman is not solely based on his endorsement by former President Trump.
The actress's endorsement has generated considerable online debate, with some users questioning her political shift. Previously, Messing was an outspoken critic of Donald Trump and actively campaigned for Democratic presidential candidates, including Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. She was also recognized by GLAAD for her contributions to the LGBTQ+ community.
However, in recent years, Messing's public focus has increasingly included strong support for Israel. This shift has reportedly led to friction with some peers in Hollywood, with actresses like Marcia Cross and Alyssa Milano publicly disagreeing with her stance on the conflict in Gaza.
Despite the backlash, some supporters have defended Messing's decision, with one commenter stating, "Glad to see she finally came to her senses."
Former President Trump is scheduled to host a campaign rally for Blakeman in Syracuse on Friday.
