Debra Messing Explains Support for Republican Governor Candidate
Actress cites cost of living and public safety concerns for backing Bruce Blakeman over incumbent.
Actress Debra Messing, long a Democrat, has publicly defended her decision to support Republican Bruce Blakeman for New York governor, citing concerns over the state's quality of life, cost of living, and public safety.
In an Instagram post, Messing stated that while her core principles—voting rights, support for the LGBTQ+ community, and gun control—remain unchanged, her feelings about New York have evolved. The "Will & Grace" star expressed growing apprehension about the rising cost of living, which she believes is making it difficult for residents, including small business owners, teachers, and nurses, to afford to live in the state. She specifically mentioned congestion pricing as a policy exacerbating these financial burdens.
Messing also voiced significant concern about public safety, stating that the violence witnessed on city streets and subways is frightening. She reflected that she does not feel better off now than she did four years ago, prompting her to question which candidate would genuinely improve conditions for New Yorkers.
She found her answer in Blakeman, whose campaign has highlighted his focus on affordability and safety, and who also supports pro-choice and LGBTQ+ rights. Messing acknowledged that Blakeman has received an endorsement from former President Donald Trump, but emphasized that her decision is not based on party affiliation or presidential endorsements. "No candidate is perfect," she wrote, "But on the issues that are hurting New Yorkers right now, I believe he’s the right choice."
Messing concluded by asserting that her vote is a personal choice guided by her conscience and priorities, rather than strict party allegiance. She previously supported Democratic candidates such as Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, and Cynthia Nixon.
