Debra Messing Endorses Republican Candidate in New York Governor's Race
The 'Will & Grace' star cited concerns over the state's economic decline and rising costs as reasons for her shift in political support.
Actress Debra Messing has endorsed Republican Bruce Blakeman in his bid for New York governor, a move that marks a departure from her previous support for Democratic candidates. Messing, a native New Yorker, expressed concerns about the state's economic trajectory and the financial pressures on its residents.
Messing voiced her support for Blakeman in a video shared on Instagram, stating, "You are what we need more than anything." She cited the "exponential and devastating" economic and social decline she believes the city has experienced, leading to business closures and residents leaving.
"The decline in this city over the last four years has been so exponential and devastating economically, socially on every level and obviously we've lost so much business here. People are leaving the city," Messing said. "It's just too expensive to live in New York City and I love the fact that that is the top of your mind."
Blakeman, the current Nassau County executive, is challenging incumbent Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul. His campaign has focused on issues such as affordability, taxes, crime, and immigration. Messing specifically mentioned affordability, congestion pricing, and rising utility costs as key reasons for her endorsement.
"You are the affordable candidate and I think more than anything people are just really struggling and they need their utilities to be lower and they don't want to have to pay to have congestion and the driving," she added.
Messing's past political endorsements include Hillary Clinton in 2016 and Cynthia Nixon's 2018 gubernatorial campaign. Her current endorsement of Blakeman, who has received backing from former President Donald Trump, represents a significant shift in her public political alignment.
