Deaths, Injuries Reported in Alberta Military Base Fire
Canadian Defense Minister David McGuinty confirmed fatalities and injuries following an incident at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, which also caused a major fire.
Multiple people were killed and injured in an incident at a military base in Alberta that resulted in a significant fire, Canada's defense minister said Saturday.
"I’m saddened to share that there have been both fatalities and injuries as a result of an incident on the base," Defense Minister David McGuinty stated. He did not provide specific casualty numbers or details about the cause of the incident, noting that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police were involved in an investigation described as "very, very active and delicate."
The Canadian Armed Forces, along with federal, provincial, and local authorities, were coordinating the emergency response. The nearby community of Wainwright offered hospital and firefighting support.
Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, located approximately 112 miles southeast of Edmonton, is a key training facility for soldiers preparing for combat operations. It houses the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre and the 3rd Canadian Division Training Centre.
The Municipal District of Wainwright reported that the fire had spread beyond the base's perimeter earlier in the day and was rapidly expanding due to high winds. Firefighters from multiple jurisdictions were responding, and no evacuation order was in place at the time of the report.
Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed thoughts for those affected via social media, stating the federal government was working closely with Alberta officials. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith characterized the fire as "significant and tragic" and affecting numerous military personnel.
Opposition leader Pierre Poilievre conveyed his support to those impacted and urged residents to follow emergency directives and keep roads clear for first responders. Officials have indicated further information will be released as it becomes available.
