The 70-year-old writer stated that while they also experience health issues, they prefer not to make them the focus of conversations unless asked. Abby suggested that for some individuals, discussing health problems may stem from reduced activity and a lack of other topics. To foster more positive interactions, Abby recommended steering conversations toward hobbies and other interests, suggesting activities like board games, book clubs, or knitting circles. If these efforts prove unsuccessful, Abby advised inquiring about friends' families as an alternative subject.
The second letter, from "Neighborly in the East," described a challenging situation involving a guest with severe autism. The reader hosts regular inclusive dinners for neighbors, welcoming children and pets. After accommodating a family with a son who has severe autism, the child exhibited disruptive behavior, including screaming, throwing food, biting, spitting, and hitting other children and animals. The situation led to guests leaving early. The child's parents apologized and proposed alternating one parent staying home with their son during future invitations. The reader, however, found this arrangement unappealing, stating a commitment to inclusivity. Subsequent invitations to the family's home revealed similar challenging behavior from the child.
Dear Abby responded that while the reader is a caring individual, there is no easy solution to the child's autism and behavioral challenges. Abby suggested that to protect future gatherings, inviting the family with their son on a separate occasion, away from other children and pets, would be a practical approach. The advice column noted that the parents' proposed solution was reasonable for managing the situation.
