Dear Abby: Father Seeks Advice on Son's Alcoholism and Family Strain

A retired executive chef has reached out to Dear Abby for advice on how to manage his adult son's severe alcoholism and the resulting strain on their family relationships. The son, also a former executive chef, reportedly consumes alcohol heavily when not at work, leading to cruel and hurtful remarks directed at family members.

His older sister has severed ties with him due to his behavior. The father, who remains in contact, states that his son calls him when intoxicated and primarily discusses cooking, despite expressing a dislike for it. The son's behavior has worsened since the death of his mother three years ago, whom he was close to.

The father expressed his love for his son but admitted that conversations are distressing and affect him for days. He sought a way to encourage his son to seek professional help, noting that his son acknowledges having an alcohol problem but takes no action. The only other family member who still communicates with the son is his younger sister, and he is also unkind to her.

In response, Dear Abby, written by Jeanne Phillips, advised the father that he cannot force his son to address his addiction. The advice stated that the son will likely not seek help until he experiences significant negative consequences, a concept often referred to as hitting rock bottom. Abby suggested the father consider attending Al-Anon meetings, a resource for family and friends of alcoholics, which can be found online at al-anon.org/info.

Another letter in the column addressed a different family issue, where a wife of 26 years felt her husband was hiding something because he became defensive when she playfully asked to access his computer. He claimed he disliked others accessing his devices, but she noted he had full access to hers. Dear Abby recommended that the couple work on improving their communication, suggesting they attend therapy together to address underlying marital issues and privacy concerns.
