In her latest advice column, Dear Abby tackles a variety of reader-submitted dilemmas, offering counsel on navigating marital expectations, developing relationships while a spouse is incarcerated, and intervening in a friend's abusive marriage.

A 56-year-old woman, identified as "Child-Free in California," wrote to Abby seeking advice on her reluctance to travel an hour and a half to visit her husband's grandbabies. She stated she is not fond of children and finds the trips a strain on their 12-year marriage. Abby suggested that while the woman shouldn't be obligated to make every trip, accompanying her husband more often than not, and doing so with a positive attitude, would be a considerate gesture. Abby also posited that the husband might appreciate her company and support for these visits.

Another letter came from "Conflicted in Georgia," whose husband is serving a life sentence with parole eligibility for a crime committed 15 years ago. She has met a new man involved in church and homeless ministry. Abby advised the letter writer to discuss her situation with her incarcerated husband, explaining that she cannot live as a widow indefinitely. She also cautioned that the new relationship is still in its early stages and lacks guaranteed permanence.

Finally, a reader from Idaho expressed concern for a friend, "Leo," whose wife reportedly degrades him in public regarding his finances, weight, and appearance. The friends believe Leo's mental health is suffering and want to express their support should he consider divorce. Abby agreed that remaining silent is not the best course of action. She suggested an intervention might be appropriate, reinforcing that Leo's friends are his chosen family and will support him regardless of his marital decisions.

Dear Abby is written by Jeanne Phillips, also known as Abigail Van Buren, and was founded by her mother, Pauline Phillips.
