Dean McCullough, a host at BBC Radio 1, has stated that his career at the station required him to "sacrifice his public views and, in turn, a part of his voice." McCullough, who completed his final shift on Thursday following a BBC schedule shake-up that led to six DJs losing their jobs, expressed that adhering to the broadcaster's strict impartiality guidelines was challenging after years of being outspoken.

McCullough, 34, previously worked at LGBTQ+ station Gaydio for three and a half years, where he was openly opinionated. In an Instagram post reflecting on his six years at BBC Radio 1, he wrote, "Moving to the BBC meant sacrificing my public views and, in turn, a part of my voice. It's not been easy and I've had to do a lot of my advocacy in the shadows." He thanked his listeners and producers for allowing him to "be me."

He joined Radio 1 in 2020, initially as a stand-in presenter before securing weekend and then weekday morning slots. McCullough stated he was nervous upon arriving at Radio 1, questioning if he could "be myself? Am I going to be able to be out and proud and unapologetically gay?" He expressed pride that he was ultimately able to be himself at the station, adding, "I just wanted to say thank you for that, and for allowing me to be myself."

The BBC's impartiality guidelines state that presenters and on-air staff can impact perceptions of impartiality, and "the public expression by staff and presenters of their own personal reactions to a statement or issue... may jeopardise perceptions of the BBC's impartiality and might give an impression of bias."

McCullough's departure is part of a wider BBC schedule change that will see new talent and social media influencers take over some shows. Award-winning duo Mylo & Rosie will replace McCullough on the Early Breakfast slot. Long-time presenters Rickie Haywood-Williams and Melvin Odoom also departed after several years. Among the new talent joining the station are influencers GK Barry and Charley Marlowe.

McCullough's final show concluded as the station prepares to introduce a new lineup of presenters, including internet personality GK Barry, who will host a series of programs starting September 10. Vicky Hawkesworth will be joined by influencer Charley Marlowe for another new show, while Emil Franchi will present Weekend Breakfast.
